I just sent an email to a potential client, posted below, and it intrigued me that some are thinking in terms of selling DVDs rather than building a business from their work. I may blog it at greater length on diyflix.
Hi -----,
Sounds like you have been busy unraveling the mystery of self-distribution--good for you!
It's important that we draw a distinction between building a business and just selling DVDs. Neoflix was created to help filmmakers build their own brand
franchise, which is why our clients all have custom-branded stores and most sell multiple versions of their film into different channels. We develop
several software and services (see http://www.magicrock.com/about.html) to help clients develop, sell, and market into multiple channels. These are all tools to help you build a business.
As for selling DVDs, we encourage clients to put their DVDs in as many online retail outlets as practical (such as Amazon; I don't know Film Baby
well enough to endorse) so they can sell incremental units to that company's customer base. However, we strongly advise clients against sending any fans
that come to your website away to some retailer's website. When you send your buyers to Amazon, you're really building their business.
Regards,
--JC
